Madrid’s Airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD) is an international airport located only 12 km from the city center.

How to get from Madrid-Barajas to the City Center and back?

By Metro de Madrid:
Line 8 towards Neuovos Ministerios has one stop for Terminal 4 and one stop for Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The ride to the center of Madrid takes around 15 minutes. Single Underground Ticket + Metro Supplement is €5.

By train:
Local network service Cercanias departs from Terminal 4. The ride to Madrid’s central train station Estacion de Atocha is 25 minutes. Single ticket is €2, 60.

By taxi:
Taxis are accessible from all 4 terminals. The price for a taxi ride from Madrid Barajas to the centre of Madrid is around 30€.

By bus:
Lines 200, Expres-203, N27 Expres, or 101 depart from the terminals to Madrid City center.

Discover Madrid

By foot: In the central of Madrid, walking is the best way to experience the city. To save time, It is a good idea to take public transport to a neighbourhood and then set off on foot to explore.

By metro: The metro operates from 6am to 2 am. There is a total of 12 main metro lines and three additional short lines to connect hub stations. The Metro is the fastest and efficient way of getting around Madrid. For route and times, check out their website.

By Bus: Most bus routes operate from Monday to Friday, 6m until 11:30pm and departs every 5-15 minutes depending on the time of the day. These buses go to places the underground no metro reach. The buses are clean, safe and efficient. Each one has air-conditioning, and you will find that they all have disabled access. Although, they can get pretty crowded. Bike rental: There is a number of places where you can hire bikes, mostly located around parks and attractions. An eco friendly bike hire scheme is BiciMad. More information can be found at here.

By Taxi: Taxis in Madrid are white with a diagonal band on their foot door which bears the emblem of the city. To hail a free taxi, shown by a greenlight, all you need to do is raise your hand. There is also a number of taxi ranks around the city, indicated by a ‘T’ sign. The fare is based on price per kilometers and hour.

After a morning out and about the city, sit down for a set lunch, menu del dia, the way the locals do it. You usually get a three courses with whatever you want to drink. This will set you for the long day ahead.

There is no need to leave tip. Just rounding up to the next euro is fine for coffees, beer and bills under 10 euros.

Many museums are free at least once a week. The Prado museum is free after 6pm, Tuesday-Saturday. The Renia Sofia museum is free after 7pm weekdays, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
